The Kazakh people in Mongolia have been training these majestic golden eagles for hunting foxes, rabbits, marmots, and, if you believe the stories, even wolves. Experiencing the Golden Eagle Festival is a once in a lifetime experience that will have you in awe watching these massive birds show off their skills. This ancient tradition, which takes place in the far west Province of Bayan Ulgii, is celebrated in October where the hunters will participate in games with their eagles to determine which one is the best trained. You will have the awesome experience of meeting these Eagle hunters and participating in the 2-day festival.

We will start our expedition by taking an early flight out to western Mongolia, and meet with a local Kazakh family that hunts with Golden Eagles. We will have our own private gers (yurts) set up right next to their home. In the next two days we will spend time with the family and learn their ways of life while participating in their Eagle training. We will accompany the family to the eagle festival where we will stay in local ger camp while we participate in the festivities over the next 2 days. Once the festival is over, we will fly back to the capital and visit Khustai national park, to see the wild Przewalski horses (takhi in Mongolian). These stocky wild horses are said to be the ancestors of all modern horses and roam free in the national park.

*Early October doesn’t work for you? Ask us about the smaller September Golden Eagle festival*

**This expedition goes well with extensions to the Gobi Desert or Terelj National Park**

The province of Zavkhan is an untouched combination of all the different landscapes of Mongolia: green and snow peaked mountains, sand dune populated desert, roiling rivers, and pristine lakes. Even the locals tout this area as one of the most beautiful landscapes of their country. This area is so off the grid that we will have a caravan of 4×4 vehicles to carry our glamping equipment and our chef’s kitchen equipment.

Did we mention roads? No? Good, because they are few and far between. This is an expedition for those that want to take the path less traveled and see few other tourists along the way.

*The Naadam Festival can be incorporated in this tour in July*

Naadam is Mongolia’s biggest festival, celebrated throughout the entire country every July. This festival spans over several days and shows off Mongolia’s most popular sports: wrestling, archery, and horse riding. The festival, dating back to the times of Chinggis Khaan (Genghis Khan) is now a way for Mongolians to celebrate their prowess, their independence, and the warmth of the summer.

This tour is unique as it will not take you to the crowded, uncomfortable festival of the big city where you must sit far away in stands. On this tour, you will see Naadam up close and intimately in a small town. We will be able to talk with the jockeys and horse breeders, watch the wrestlers up close, mingle with the locals, and enjoy this festival as it is meant to be, without the commercialization. We will also spend time with a local Mongolian family learning their way of life, as well as glamping (with your own cook) at some gorgeous rivers.

*Visiting a Naadam festival can be incorporated into our other tours that happen in July*

In the boreal forests of the northern mountains of Mongolia, lives a group of people called the Dukha, Tsaatan in Mongolian. This group of people has a strong connection to nature and practice Tengerism, or shamanism, and believe the spirits in the forest watch over them. Historically, the Tsaatan have led a sustainable life by herding reindeer, from which their lives and culture depend on. Recently, as reindeer populations have shrunk and wars over the past 100 years have displaced them, there are said to be only 40 families left.

During the summer, the Tsaatan camp can only be reached by horse. You will fly up north and depart on an expedition by car and horse to live among the Tsaatan for a few days along with your guides, drivers, and your own cook!

Many nonprofits and government agencies donate necessary goods to the Tsaatan’s way of life, although it does not help them keep their culture. Tourism can marginally help provide a supplement to their income as travelers, respectfully, visit this area and take an interest in their reindeer and their way of life.

This tour is for all the adventurers that want to feel how vast the country of Mongolia actually is. In this 18 day journey by 4×4 you will experience a wide variety of landscapes as you travel across Mongolia. Climb dormant volcanoes and vast sand dunes. Meet with nomadic people in their gers (yurts). Relax in mineral enriched hot spring water pumped from the ground. See the flaming cliffs were the first dinosaur eggs were discovered. Take a glimpse into Mongolia’s ancient and infamous history.

Our circular journey begins as we travel south into the Gobi desert. The land will change from green steppe to a vast desert. We will then head north-west into a green and lush land with rivers, mountains, steppe, and lakes. As we continue our journey north, the land will change into forested mountains that surround the pristine Lake Khovsgol, Mongolia’s blue pearl. We will end our journey by a flight back to Ulaanbaatar, the capital, where you will discover its museums, local life, and markets.
