Tour Summary
In western Mongolia resides the Tavan Bogd Altai mountain range. This area is home to Mongolian nomads, Kazakh Eagle hunters, and panoramic mountains. Our expedition will start with a flight to the far west province of Byan-Ulgii where we will begin our trek with pack camels. This medium-level trek will keep your jaw dropping as you pass through rocky mountains, snow peaked mountains, and alpine lakes. We will finish our expedition with a visit to a local Eagle Hunter family where we will learn how they hunt with their Golden Eagles.

Day 1 Arrival in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia Welcome to Mongolia! You will arrive in Ulaanbaatar, the capital, where your guide and driver will be waiting for you. You will then be transferred to your hotel where you can freshen up. If you are not too tired from your long flight, your guide will take you to the Mongolia Museum of Natural History, the Gandan Buddhist Monastery, and in the evening, you can see a traditional Mongolian folk concert with dance and throat singing. Day 2 Flight to Bayan-Ulgii In the morning, we will take an early two-and-a-half-hour flight out to Bayan-Olgii province in the west. Once we arrive, our drivers will show up in 4x4 vehicles and take us into town. We will check into our hotel and then head into town to visit a local museum, the market, and a local tapestry and carpet and tapestry making shop. Day 3 Altan Tavan Bogd National Park After enjoying our breakfast at the hotel, we will head in the direction of the majestic Altai Mountains until we hit the border of the National park. Once here, our 4x4 vehicles will return and we will set up camp. In the evening, our camel herders will join us with our pack camels. Day 4 Trek To Base Camp In the morning after breakfast, we will break camp and load everything on to our pack camels. Once the camels are packed, we will begin our trekking journey. We will trek up into the hillside while passing a small river on the way. As we gradually ascend the hill, we will finally get our first close up glimpse of the snowcapped high peaks of the mountains, as well as the Potanin Glacier. Day 5 Climb up to Mt Malchin Today we will set out on a non-technical climb on one of the four thousander mountains, Malchin peak (or Herder’s peak) which sits 4050 meters above sea level. We will start the trek along the glacier until we hit the bottom of Mt Malchin. From here on out, it is a very steep slope up. Just before we hit the summit, we will start to hike on the snow. Once we hit the top, we will have an unforgettable and incredible view of the entire Altai mountain range. We will be able to see all the way out to Russia, China, and even a little bit of Kazakhstan. Once we are finished, we will return to the base camp and rest for the evening. Day 6 Down to Tsagaan Gol Today we break camp and again load our pack camels. We will start trekking along the glacier until we hit Tsagaan Gol (or White River), aptly named due to its source being the glacier. The current runs fast and we will be provided with quite an exciting scene as the camels cross it. We will then settle on the other side of the river next to some Tuvan families and make our camp. Day 7 Trek over Shiveet into Baavgait After breakfast, we will break camp and continue our trek along the White River and turn right over a small mountain pass with a small lake at the top. This mountain top is where nomadic herder families camp out during the winter so they do not let their animals graze on it during the summer. We will continue down the south side of the hill and up into Baavgait valley (or Bear Valley) where we can see some Tuvan families summering here. This area is the pasture of the camel herders that we had hired. We will set up camp within walking distance from them and it is our tradition that we visit and share dinner with them for the evening. Day 8 Trekking over Most Pass Today we will have our most challenging trek. We will trek over a 3000-meter mountain in the mountain pass named “Most” (or Ice in English). We will start in the morning and head straight up until we hit a glacier that runs through the pass. Depending on the weather, trekking across this glacier can be very difficult, so we may go around it. We will eventually begin to descend from the glacier and the sudden change in landscape will surprise you. The past few days we will have been trekking across snowy and rocky mountains, but this side is filled with forest, green vegetation, and wildflowers. We will continue our descent until we hit Tsagaan Us Gol (or White Water River). We will set up camp and take our hard earned rest for the night. Day 9 End of trek: Khoton Lake This morning will be the last morning we load our pack camels. We will trek along the White Water River through lush, green meadows that are carpeted in flowers of various colors. We will continue hiking along the valley until we clear out into the opening where our support vehicles will be waiting for us. It is now time to bid farewell to our camels and their herders and load of the vehicles. We will have some lunch and take a short drive to the beautiful Khoton lake. Day 10 Rest Day at Khoton Today we will take a rest day from our amazing expedition. We can take an option short hike, go for a dip in the lake, or visit a nearby Kazakh family. Day 11 Meet an Eagle Hunter Family Today, we will pack up our tents and drive out to the provincial capital of Bayan-Olgii. Along the way, we will stop by and visit one of the Kazakh Eagle Hunters. These people train Golden eagles to hunt wolves, foxes, and other animals for them. We will reach Bayan-Olgii in the evening and check into a ger camp. Day 12 Fly to Ulaanbaatar After breakfast, we will head to the airport to fly back to Ulaanbaatar. Once we arrive, we can visit any places that we did not have time to before. We will enjoy our first night back in a big city. Day 13 Ulaanbaatar Day Today you will have time to see more of the sites and museums around the city that you may have missed! Undoubtedly, you will want to do some shopping for Mongolian souvenirs and some of the famous and inexpensive Mongolian cashmere.
